How to BE Healthy
Yet another article on getting healthy? You’ve read these before, and you have even tried a few out, but it just never sticks. You’ve done the diets, you’ve tried the workouts but eventually you realize it’s not working. The article said it would help you “get” healthy, and it did just that. I’m here to help you BE healthy. I want to help you create a healthy lifestyle that you LOVE. Living a healthy lifestyle is a lot of different things to me. (I have another post about all the topics that pertain to a healthy lifestyle if you are interested in more details->https://healthy4happy.wordpress.com/2017/02/27/living-my-healthy-lifestyle/). I write this to help you all see that health is fun and it is a positive thing, regardless of what the media or others around you have made you believe.
Here are my best tips on how to BE healthy:
- Be healthy for YOU.
Being healthy and taking care of your body should be something that makes you feel confident in yourself. Be healthy because it will improve your life, your mood, the way your body feels, the way you move, and more! If you are being healthy because someone told you to or because you want to please others, then it is not going to feel gratifying like it should.
- Do what makes you FEEL good.
If going to the gym does not make you feel happy or good, then find something else that does! Go for a hike with your friends. Dance, swim, play soccer, move your body in a way that makes you FEEL good. If your body feels like it is going to quit if you don’t have any sugar, then listen to it and have a piece of chocolate. Your body is smart and being healthy is about listening to your body, NOT punishing it.
- Don’t compare your health to others
Everyone has different health goals, different body structures, different cells, different genes, and so much more, so why do you have to be doing the exact same thing as x person to be healthy like x person is. YOU DO NOT. Some people’s bodies feel their best when fueled with dairy, meat and vegetables. Other people are plant-based eaters and find that their bodies thrive off of that. This does not mean one is “healthier” than the other, it just shows how everyone has different bodies and that is more than okay. This goes for exercise as well. Some people find that they enjoy strictly cardio-based exercise and others find that their bodies feel their strongest when they are lifting. Both people are focusing on the way their bodies feel and doing what they enjoy. One is not better than the other, it is just what works for your own body!
- Stop linking health with your appearance
To me health is not just a physical thing. Being healthy applies to your mental state just as much as your physical state. When I say physical state, I’m not talking about your size. I am talking about how functional your organ systems are and how well your body can fight disease. If a person has a strong heart, a strong immune system and other well functioning body systems, then they have a healthy body, regardless of what their jean size is. You will never be satisfied if you base your health on your appearance. Having a “flat stomach” is not as rewarding as the media makes it out to be. You will not wake up in the morning and say, “Wow, my body aches and I am so hungry, but hey, I have abs so it’s going to be a great day” No, I can tell you from experience, that is not how it goes. However, if your body is satisfied and energized and FEELS HEALTHY, then you will wake up and feel good and ready to take on the day!
- Be kind to yourself.
This is all a process and it takes time. You will change but it is important to love who you were before just as much as you love who you’re becoming. You have to listen to your body, but you also have to listen to your brain sometimes. Health is not supposed to be depriving yourself of things that you enjoy. Health should be a balance of treating yourself and your mind AND providing your body with natural foods, nutrients and activity.
- Enjoy foods that make your body feel energized.
And no I don’t mean coffee! Of course, you can have a coffee but your body needs clean fuel that will keep it feeling good and energized to last the entire day. My main tip for eating healthy is to eat natural foods that make my body feel good. Eat to make your body feel like it can easily carry you throughout your day without question.
I write this post not to tell anyone how to live their life, but to try and make a difference in the way the world sees health. The media promotes health as a size and a look for their own benefit. Of course, we all want to be healthy, but the media uses this term and twists it so that people will spend money on diet pills, detox teas, supplements, etc. Health is such a positive and incredible thing and I am tired of the media making it something people make themselves suffer for. If I can help even one person see that health should be enjoyable, then I have succeeded.
